Watching footage of the fires in Southern California, with my brother and his family under evacuation orders in La Cañada and Altadena, has me reflecting deeply on the nature of fire itself. Fire is archetypal and fundamental—essential to human development yet capable of immense destruction. Its paradoxical nature has shaped not only human history but also our understanding of transformation, both personal and collective.

Interestingly—or perhaps intuitively—on January 1st, I felt a sudden, urgent need to order new fire extinguishers for our house. It wasn’t something I’d thought about in years, but it hit me out of the blue: “I need fire extinguishers, now.” Given the timing, it’s a detail I can’t ignore as I ponder the archetype of fire and its relevance to current events.

Fire as a Creative and Destructive Force

Fire is a symbol of transformation in its purest form. It refines and shapes, turning raw materials into tools and food into nourishment. The discovery and harnessing of fire marked a pivotal moment in human evolution, allowing our ancestors to cook food, stay warm, and ultimately develop the "brains" that define us as a species.

Yet fire is equally dangerous. Left unattended or left to explode, it becomes a destructive force, consuming indiscriminately and leaving devastation in its wake. This duality is what makes fire both a sustaining force and a terrifying one. It soothes and warms, but it can also rage out of control, reminding us of the fine line between creation and destruction.

The Archetype of Fire in Astrology

Astrologically, fire is associated with certain planets and signs, each carrying its own energy and expression. These archetypes reflect fire’s spectrum, from its higher, creative vibrations to its lower, destructive ones.

Mars: The Spark

  • Higher Vibration: Mars is the spark that initiates action. It represents courage, vitality, and passion, fueling creation and progress.

  • Lower Vibration: When unchecked, Mars becomes impulsive and destructive, the fire that burns without purpose.

Sun: Sustained Light

  • Higher Vibration: The Sun embodies life-giving warmth, identity, and purpose. It’s the hearth that sustains and nurtures.

  • Lower Vibration: An unbalanced Sun can become overbearing, consuming others with pride or egotism, like a flame that scorches instead of warms.

Pluto: Fire as Transformation

  • Higher Vibration: Pluto governs the fire of destruction for the sake of renewal. Think of volcanoes, whose eruptions clear the land and enrich the soil.

  • Lower Vibration: At its darkest, Pluto represents annihilation without rebirth—a destructive fire that leaves only ruin.

Uranus: Fire as Revolution

  • Higher Vibration: Uranus is the lightning strike that sparks change. Its fire is innovative and awakening, breaking through stagnation.

  • Lower Vibration: Unbalanced, Uranus becomes chaos and destabilization, creating disruption without direction.

Fire Signs in Astrology

The fire signs—Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius—embody fire’s elemental qualities in different forms:

  • Aries (Cardinal Fire): The spark of initiation, bold and courageous but also prone to impulsive destruction.

  • Leo (Fixed Fire): The steady, creative flame that inspires and warms, but can become self-centered and domineering.

  • Sagittarius (Mutable Fire): The wandering flame of knowledge and exploration, adventurous and visionary, yet sometimes reckless or scattered.

The Dual Nature of Fire

Fire’s archetypal duality is its defining feature. It exists on a spectrum:

  • Higher Vibration: Fire as creation, warmth, and enlightenment. It is the hearth that unites, the candle that guides, and the transformative flame of renewal.

  • Lower Vibration: Fire as chaos, destruction, and harm. It isolates, blinds, and consumes.

This duality is reflected in our own lives. Fire can serve as a powerful ally, illuminating the path forward and burning away what no longer serves us. But if left unchecked, it can lead to harm and devastation.

A Personal Connection to Fire

My decision to order fire extinguishers just days before these fires began feels significant. It wasn’t premeditated; it was an intuitive moment that struck me out of the blue. Reflecting on it now, I can’t help but see it as a metaphor for the balance we must strike with fire in our lives. While fire is essential, it also demands respect. We must tend to it carefully, ready to extinguish it when it threatens to rage out of control.

Fire as a Collective and Personal Story

The fires in Southern California remind us of fire’s destructive power, but they also highlight its regenerative potential. Archetypally, fire tests boundaries, forcing us to confront where we’ve left things untended or where transformation is necessary. The cycles of wildfire and regrowth in nature reflect the same themes we see in astrology—destruction as a prelude to renewal.

Pluto and Uranus, in particular, reflect this process:

  • Pluto’s Transformation: Fire clears the old to make way for the new. While terrifying, it often leads to growth.

  • Uranus’s Awakening: Fire shocks us into awareness, reminding us of nature’s power and our own vulnerability.

Fire in Our Own Lives

Whether through astrology, personal reflection, or collective events, fire calls us to examine its presence in our lives. Where are we harnessing its warmth and light? Where are we at risk of letting it burn out of control?

As I watch the events unfolding in Southern California, my heart goes out to my brother, his family, and everyone affected by the fires. At the same time, I’m reminded of fire’s deeper lessons: its power to create, destroy, and ultimately transform. Fire demands respect—and perhaps a few well-placed fire extinguishers—so we can harness its energy without falling victim to its chaos.
